They are worth saving, they should be saved, they must be saved.

The Kamfer Dam must be protected.

Dear Keith

Thank you once again for signing the Save the Flamingo petition (www.savetheflamingo.co.za). We are taking the liberty of sending an e-mail message to everyone who signed the petition, because they have already shown a commitment to the conservation of Kamfers Dam’s flamingos.

Kamfers Dam's flamingos need your help, and we appeal to you to please donate much-needed funds (by electronic bank transfer or by credit card; http://www.savetheflamingo.co.za/donate.php ).

To remind you, Kamfers Dam, the wetland located just outside Kimberley (South Africa), is home to:
- the largest permanent population of Lesser Flamingos in southern Africa
- the only Lesser Flamingo breeding site in South Africa
- one of only four Lesser Flamingo breeding sites in Africa, and one of only six such sites in the world
- perhaps the only site where Lesser Flamingos will breed annually (Lesser Flamingos breed successfully only every 12 years at Etosha Pan in Namibia)
- the only site in the world where Lesser Flamingos breed on an artificial, purpose-built island

It is of critical importance that we protect Kamfers Dam and its population of Lesser Flamingos. Regular breeding at this site will help reverse the current negative population trend of this globally 'near threatened' species. [The flamingo breeding activity on Kamfers Dam’s island can be viewed live on www.africam.com]

Kamfers Dam currently faces two important threats, deteriorating water quality and a proposed massive housing development on a property adjoining this important wetland. The Save the Flamingo Association, an environmental non-profit NGO, was formed to address these threats and to ensure that Kamfers Dam’s flamingos are conserved (for more information see www.savetheflamingo.co.za).

The Save the Flamingo Association urgently needs funds to (a) conduct water quality analyses, (b) undertake legal action, (c) maintain the flamingo breeding island, and (c) ensure that Kamfers Dam and adjoining properties are conserved.

In order to do its work, the Save the Flamingo Association urgently needs funds. We are appealing to the 7000+ people who signed the online petition to donate just R100 (the equivalent of about US$10) towards this important work. If everyone contributed this relatively small amount of money we’d be in a very good position to address the immediate threats to Kamfers Dam.

We have set up an online donation system to make it easy for you to contribute a small amount of money towards the Save the Flamingo Association’s important work at Kamfers Dam.

You can also make your donation by credit card. See the Donate section on http://www.savetheflamingo.co.za/donate.php

The Save the Flamingo Association’s finances are audited by PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Please forward this message to your family, friends and colleagues and indeed to everyone you know who cares about the future conservation of the Lesser Flamingo.

We are very grateful for your contribution towards the conservation of Kamfers Dam’s flamingos.

Many, many thanks.
